# Centrelink when someone dies

## What we lodge as nominee, and what it means for a surviving partner.

### What we do

As nominee, we check the person's Centrelink record first, so we know exactly what was being paid. Then we lodge the Advice of Death with Centrelink and its aged care team, and close the record properly. Funeral directors often notify Centrelink too, but it isn't always processed, so we make sure it is.

Our role as nominee ends with the person's record. We don't look after myGov, Medicare, the ATO or other services: Services Australia's [bereavement page](https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/bereavement) lists who to tell.

### If our engagement has ended

If a Concierge has finished and you didn't take up Centrelink care, the family tells Centrelink. We'll point you to the right form.

### If there is a surviving partner

A partner who was on a pension or payment with the person who died may receive a bereavement payment: the difference between the couple rate and their new single rate for the 14 weeks after the death, usually as a lump sum. Their pension is then reassessed as a single person. Where we look after the partner's Centrelink too, we handle this for them.

### Payments after the date of death

Payments made after the date of death may need to be repaid. That is why we notify Centrelink quickly. If anything does need to be paid back, we will tell you what and why.
