Why your aged care assessment goes to the home

Centrelink's income and assets assessment goes to the home as part of the RAD payment, with a copy to you.

When Centrelink's income and assets assessment arrives, we send it to the aged care home as part of arranging the refundable accommodation deposit (RAD), and email you a copy the same day. You don't need to do anything with it.

What the assessment does

It sets the means-tested fees the home can charge, and what the resident is asked to pay towards their accommodation. Homes usually wait for the assessment before they take the RAD, so we keep you posted on where it's up to.

How it happens

  1. We lodge the assessment with Centrelink as your nominee, usually once the home is chosen.
  2. We follow it up with Centrelink until it's done.
  3. We check the result against what we expected. If it looks wrong, we ask Centrelink to correct it.
  4. We send it to the home, with a copy to you.
  5. We check the home has applied the fees it sets.

Couples

If a couple enter care on different dates, the timing of each assessment matters. We plan it with you and explain it to the home in writing.

After that

Once the RAD, a daily accommodation payment (DAP) or a mix is settled, we check the home's first invoice against the assessment and let you know it's right. If your situation changes later, we update Centrelink so the fees can be reassessed.

For anything about paying for care from your own money, talk to your adviser.
